Upcoming Matches & Training Sessions

It was the perfect end to a really good season as the blues won their cup final 9-0 against Miam Miam. Gabriel will grab the headlines for his three goals but this was a performance that all the players could be proud of with all of them getting 10 out of 10 from me.

There’s something special about cup final day and the boys know it as well. The eagerness to do well was obvious from the start as everyone turned up on time and the lads were clearly looking forward to the game.  There was a great turn out from the parents and lovely to see the whole club supporting both teams.

Lucas went in goal at the start of the game with Jacob at the back. Isaac and Teddy started in Midfield with Corey up front and it was Corey’s corner that led to the opening goal. A lovely cross from the wee man evaded everyone apart from Isaac who ran in at the back post to volley home. I’d love to say it was straight off the training ground but we don’t practice corners (mental note to practice corners!).

Teddy was running the show as every time he got the ball he looked likely to score. Chris has been telling him to relax when he gets in scoring or passing positions and he’s clearly been listening. Teddy had already had a few sighters at goal when he ran down the right-hand side, composed himself before firing goalward. The ball looked like it was going in but Corey “the fox in the box” made sure and poked in his sides second goal. Corey had worked his socks off in the first 10 minutes and Teddy didn’t begrudge him the goal. The blues were in control and could’ve scored more but did need to rely on a good save from Lucas to keep their clean sheet.

The second ten minutes saw the introduction of Gabriel and Marcus with Lucas playing at the back. The change of personnel didn’t change the momentum as the boys picked up where they’d left off. Teddy fired in a corner that unfortunately was turned into his own net from a Miam Miam player. Ted couldn’t claim that goal but he didn’t have to wait long to get his name on the scoresheet and what a goal it was. He won a good tackle in his own half before breaking at pace to beat a Miam Miam… through on goal  “super” Ted composed himself to finish with real calmness.

You don’t associate Unsworth with long balls but it’s always good to mix things up a bit. A hoof from Lucas went straight to a Miam Miam defender but Gabriel pressured him, won the ball and then fired past the keeper to get his first of the morning. It’s something he’s been working on so it’s great to see his hard work getting rewarded. Marcus then completed the scoring in the first half as he raced down the left flank before passing the ball past the keeper. A super cool finish from Marcus and it made it 6-0 to the blues.

Corey and Isaac came back on for Teddy and Lucas as the blues continued dominate the game. Marcus, who never stopped running, burst down the left again before crossing to Gabe to side foot his second of the game. Our 8th goal was all down to Gabriel, winning the ball in his own half before breezing past a challenge to finish with real authority to get his hat-trick. Isaac, who was having a lot of joy down the right-hand side, went past his marker before putting a ball into the old “corridor of uncertainty”. Unfortunately, a Miam Miam player put it into his own net for the second time in the game to make it 9-0 and that completed the scoring.

As the boys came off the field with applause ringing in their ears we told them how proud we were of them. We went through each player individually and told them how far they’d come this season. It’s always horrible to lose and I felt for the Miam Miam boys but I’m glad they still were smiling as they picked up their trophies. The blues were delighted to get their hands on some silverware, I don’t think I’ve seen Marcus smile like that for as long!

A fabulous way to finish the season and I can’t help but think back when all the boys started around 3 years ago. Running around chasing the ball and kicking lumps out of each other. They’ve learned so much in that time and now look like proper footballers. I can’t wait to see how much they are going to improve in another year!
