The Unsworth Blues continued their impressive form after fighting back from 2-0 down to win 8-5. Teddy scored an incredible three-minute hat-trick and was ably assisted by his partners in crime Marcus and Gabriel who got two each.

It was a gorgeous day and even Darrell had his legs out! The grass was long but it was great to be off the AstroTurf and hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Teddy made his usual last minute appearance just in time for kick off so Lucas went in goal with Jacob at the back, Corey on the left and Isaac on the right. Gabriel took his usual position up front and started trying to get the ball right from the kick off.

Roach greens are a new team but they had some familiar faces in their ranks and started off well. The blues tried to get their passing game going but nothing much was really happening. Isaac was doing a lot of good work on the right but the blues failed to meaningfully test the keeper early on.

Roach raced into a two-goal lead. The first was a nice finish from a corner and the second owed much to our lack of tackling as anything else. It could have been worse if Lucas hadn’t made some good saves.

The next ten minutes were completely different. Teddy and Marcus came on for Gabriel and Jacob and Corey went in net with Lucas at the back. To be fair to Roach their manager also made changes. Straight from the off Marcus was hustling and harrying players and that was infectious. Teddy raced onto a Roach throw in before placing the ball past the keeper.

Before Darrell could let everyone know on WhatsApp that Teddy had scored the young man had made it 2-2. Marcus was unlucky not to get in on the act as well as he burst through the middle of the Roach defence, he shot just wide but the referee brought the play back for an earlier foul on Marcus. It was set up perfectly for Teddy to do what Teddy does best and a powerful shot left the Roach keeper wishing she was somewhere else. As good a three minute as Teddy could’ve hoped for with his Dad watching on.

3-2 but the blues weren’t finished Isaac was switched on at a throw in and he found Marcus who squeezed the ball in at the near post and the same two combined to make it 5-2. Isaac who seems to be growing in confidence with every game took the ball down the right before delivering the perfect pass for Marcus to score.

The 10 minutes seemed to last an awful long time as player after player from Roach went down, rolled around a bit, before rolling around a bit more!

It was a much easier team talk at half time and we decided to put Jacob in goal with Gabriel replacing Isaac. Roach’s third goal was a little controversial as Marcus seemed to win the ball in a fair challenge but after another delay for tears the referee decided to give a free-kick from which they scored. It was a lovely goal but rather harsh on the boys.

Marcus, Teddy and Gabriel all had chances to score before Roach made it 5-4. Teddy tried to stop a shot but unfortunately did it with his hand. It was a penalty but a very similar one in the first half wasn’t given for the blues which made it feel very harsh.

Gabriel, who looked a different player from the first ten minutes, was chasing and tackling as well as he has done all season and he got his just rewards as he pounced on a clearance before slotting the ball in past the onrushing keeper. There was a fair bit more crying and rolling around before the third quarter ended.

The match was much tighter than it should have as Teddy went in goal with Corey and Isaac coming back on for Lucas and Marcus. Straight from the kick off the boys scored the goal of the game. Jacob played a beautiful ball into the path of Isaac who’d made a great run down the right. His cross was inch perfect for Gabriel who made no mistake for his second and the blues 7th.

Roach kept it interesting as they made it 7-5 a run through the middle was met with little resistance and Teddy had no chance. Reinforcements were needed to see the game out and Marcus and Lucas came on for the last 5 minutes. It was Lucas who helped make the game safe another good ball from Jacob was gathered by Southy on the left before he cut in and crossed the ball. Unfortunately, one of the Roach players inadvertently put it in her own goal. Teddy very kindly tried to give the goal to Lucas but his search for his first of the season goes on.

8-5 it finished and the obvious choice for man of the match was super Ted but when Pat and I talked about it the improvement from Gabriel during the game stood out so we decided to award the trophy to him. Football, sunshine and a win. The perfect combination.
