Upcoming Matches & Training Sessions

Unsworth continued their good form in the Cup as they ran out deserved 6-4 winners against Miam Miam at Cardinal Langley. Teddy, Isaac and Marcus all got two goals each as the blues dominated another game.

The boys were looking sharp in the warm up and even Isaac looked bright eyed and bushy tailed despite the early kick off.

Corey started in goal with Lucas at the back. Teddy fresh from a sleep over at Chris and Ruth’s was on the left with Isaac on the right and Gabriel up front.

A very small pitch meant there was always going to be lots of goals and the blues after a promising opening fell behind to an extraordinary own goal. The ball was bouncing around on the right and Isaac tried to clear but inadvertently looped the ball goal wards. Corey, open mouthed in anticipation, got underneath it but the bounce beat him and he couldn’t stop it going into his own net.

A few months ago, that would have seen the boy’s heads drop but they are now made of stronger stuff. The boys have been working on staying in their positions and it paid off for the equalizer. A good tackle from Isaac led to Lucas bursting up the line his cross found Teddy who had the simplest tap in to make it 1-1.

The blues second goal was a beauty. Isaac, who is seemingly growing in confidence week by week, was determined to make up for his OG. He intercepted a ball on the left before getting it out of his feet and from outside the area, hit an absolute corker into the top corner and the blues were deservedly in the lead.

It was 2-1 going into the second ten minutes when Jacob and Marcus came on. Marcus wasn’t happy about not being on earlier but that would change later. Corey was out of goal and looked like he’d made it 3-1 when his shot from the corner looked to have gone over the line but wasn’t given.

The boys didn’t have to wait long for their two-goal cushion though as a shot was stopped with the hands of one of the Miam Miam defenders. Penalty and there was only one man who was going to take it. Isaac has ice running through his veins and put his penalty into the bottom right hand corner.

It was exactly what the blues efforts deserved but another own goal would change the momentum of the game. Corey went to clear a corner but the ball screwed off his foot and went beyond Lucas.

Lucas then made a good save down to his right but he had to pick the ball out of his net moments later. Jacob, who’s passing was again superb, came out a little late as Miam Miam broke quickly and a shot from outside the area made it 3-3.

It was a funny half with the blues being much the better side but somehow it was level at the break. Pat and I told them to carry on doing what they were doing and they would be fine. The boys were pushing hard for a breakthrough and it came courtesy of another smashing goal. Miam Miam handled the ball outside the area and Teddy was asked to take it much to Marcus’ disgust but super Ted smashed the ball into the net through a sea of Miam players.

Then the moment finally came for Marcus to smile. His hard work down the right meant he had some time on the ball. He looked like he was going to cross but saw the goalkeeper just off his line and he quickly decided to go for goal instead. It was the right decision and the blues led 5-3 thanks to a bit of quick thinking from the now happy Marcus. What a difference that goal made to him. Suddenly he was everywhere and causing Miam all sorts of problems.

We worked on marking at training and making sure we are the right side of a player and the boys did that well for most of the game but we were caught out for Miam’s 4th goal. A quick break saw three players bearing down on Jacob who upended their biggest player inside the area. Penalty to Miam and although Teddy got a hand to it he couldn’t keep it out.

I thought we were going to be in for a tense last few minutes but Marcus eased all our nerves. A great tackle from the striker saw him through on goal and he didn’t disappoint with the finish. 6-4 to the blues and another win for an improving side.

Corey was so much more disciplined today and Lucas and Jacob were the unsung heroes at the back. Gabriel worked tirelessly and was unlucky not to score. There were three contenders for man of the match with Isaac, Teddy and Marcus all contributing so much. We couldn’t separate them so we asked the opposition manager for his pick. He gave the nod to the transformed Marcus. From grumpy to ecstatic in the space of 40 minutes… It’s a funny old game.
